The mayor welcomes Ander Martín and Esther Briz after they won European gold in Beach Sprint
The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, and the councilor for Sports, Diana Box, welcomed athletes from the Real Club Náutico Torrevieja (RCNT), Ánder Martín and Esther Briz, to recognize their victories in the European Beach Sprint Championship, held on September 17th in La Línea de la Concepción (Cádiz). They were accompanied by the club's president, Carlos Carmona. The two members of the Spanish national team won gold medals in their respective individual events, men's and women's, adding another international success to the Torrevieja club's record.
Eduardo Dolón congratulated both athletes on their results: “It is a source of pride for Torrevieja to have athletes like Ánder Martín and Esther Briz, who represent effort, perseverance, and the ability to overcome challenges. These European titles are recognition of many hours of training and a career that deserves our congratulations and gratitude.”
The mayor also highlighted the positive impact their triumphs have had on the city, and thanked them for bringing the name of Torrevieja and the Royal Yacht Club to the forefront of international sport. “Your achievements are a source of joy for the entire city and an example for young people who are starting to play sports and who see you as role models.”
TWO EUROPEAN TITLES THAT ENHANCE AN EXCELLENT RECORD
Ander Martín won the European men's individual championship after successively defeating representatives from Switzerland, Germany, and Finland. This victory improved upon his runner-up finish in Turkey in 2015. His career includes five world gold and two bronze medals in coastal rowing, two European gold and one silver medals, two Mediterranean Games titles, and more than thirty medals in Spanish championships.
Esther Briz, meanwhile, was crowned European champion in the women's individual event after defeating the defending Austrian representative in the final. She had previously beaten the Portuguese rower in the quarterfinals and the British rower in the semifinals.
Briz has two world titles in junior and senior categories of conventional rowing and four world titles in coastal rowing and Beach Sprint, in addition to European titles, sixteen Spanish championships and an Olympic diploma in Paris 2024. This year she has also made history by becoming the first Spanish woman to win the Women's Boat Race with Oxford.
NEXT GOAL: THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP AND THE 2028 OLYMPIC HORIZON
The next challenge for both athletes will be the Beach Sprint World Championship.
scheduled for October 18-20 in Qingdao, China, as part of its preparations for the
Olympic debut of this modality in Los Angeles 2028.
