The Councilor for Beaches, Antonio Vidal, has announced that the city of Torrevieja will celebrate the traditional Bonfires of San Juan on its beaches this coming Monday, June 23rd. Vidal reported that many Torrevieja residents are enjoying this popular festival on our beaches, which serves as the starting gun for summer, becoming a special celebration enjoyed by both young and old.

This typical Levantine tradition will be celebrated on four beaches (La Mata, El Cura, Los Locos, and Los Náufragos), and they will be monitored by local police, Civil Guard, and Civil Protection officers.

The City Council will provide wood for this popular festival. A total of approximately 15,000 kilos of pine and mimosa wood—which leaves no residue—will be donated. No other types of wood or items that could be used for bonfires will be permitted on the beaches.

The firewood distribution points will be: on Los Náufragos beach at the entrance to the Poniente pier; on Los Locos beach (central area); on Cura beach (northern area); and on La Mata beach, there will be three distribution points: on Avenida del Agua (next to the pumping station); on Avenida de los Europeos, next to the lifeguard station; and in La Mata town, in front of Encarnación Puchol square. The Beach Department recommends that bonfires not exceed one meter in height for safety reasons.

The celebration schedule for the Bonfire Night of San Juan on the four beaches of Torrevieja will be from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., at which point residents will be invited to finish the festivities as beach cleanup begins. For that evening, the Department of Urban Sanitation will have special reinforcements to clean these four beaches.

A total of around 50 people will make up the security detail, including local police, Civil Guards, and Civil Protection volunteers, as well as three ambulances for any incidents that may arise during the night and early morning.

Finally, Antonio Vidal stated that they hope it will be a night of popular celebration and enjoyment for all those who visit the town's beaches. He also urged people to be responsible and collect all belongings and waste they may have accumulated when leaving the beaches and place them next to the trash cans.
