Torrevieja City Council's Councilor for Gender and LGBTQ+ Policies, Inmaculada Montesinos, and the director of the UA Torrevieja Headquarters, Jesús Segarra, presented the events scheduled for Pride 2025 this morning.

The UA Headquarters, the result of a collaboration agreement between Torrevieja City Council and the University of Alicante, is collaborating with Torrevieja Pride 2025 with a talk entitled "Between Nits and Merlins: A Journey Through LGBTQ+ Characters on Television," to be held at the Torrevieja Casino on July 6 at 8:00 p.m. It will be given by Toni Maestre-Brotons, a senior lecturer at the University of Alicante.

This intervention proposes an overview of the representation of non-normative sexualities in recent television series, primarily Spanish. Its objective is to analyze the tropes, trends, most frequent archetypes, and the identity politics that underpin them. Attention is also paid to the educational nature of some of these series, as is the case with Merlí (2015-2018), a highly successful teen series in recent years. Nor can we ignore the phenomenon of the Javis, which have marked a milestone in the history of television by turning queer characters into the absolute protagonists of their plots, from Paquita Salas (2016) to Mariliendre (2025).

Toni Maestre-Brotons is a professor at the University of Alicante and a member of its Institute for Research in Gender Studies (IUIEG) and the Seminar on Queer Studies. He teaches contemporary literature and film. He has researched and published on the representation of masculinity and non-conformist sexualities in literature, film, television, and social media. Some of his work in this area has appeared in journals such as Sexualities, the Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies , and Fotocinema.
