UA's environmental education, awareness, and sensitization day to commemorate International Tourism Day
Next Saturday, September 27th, is International Tourism Day. The University Laboratory for Intelligent Tourism (TI.LAB) , in collaboration with the University of Alicante Campus in Torrevieja and the City Council's Department of Tourism, has organized the event "Once upon a time there was a beach. From monk seals to the Kentish plover" to educate, raise awareness, and sensitize the public about the need to care for the environment, a strategic component of sustainable tourism.
To this end, the CYP Plovers and Kents research and scientific outreach project has jointly organized a series of activities and workshops with TI.LAB and the UA Headquarters. These will take place at the intersection of Concepción and Canónigo Torres Streets in Torrevieja on Saturday, September 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Among the planned activities, we will learn about monk seals, a surprising marine mammal, as well as their history, which our Mediterranean coast has witnessed, their current situation, and what we can do for their future and that of other species such as Kentish plovers and loggerhead turtles, among others, that still inhabit our coastal and marine ecosystems. This event will be offered by the team of Estefanía Alonso Gómez, biologist and science communicator, director of the CYP Plovers and Kentish Seals project.
TI.LAB, the UA Headquarters in Torrevieja, the CYP (Plovers and Black-legged Plovers), and Torrevieja City Council encourage both children and seniors to enjoy and learn during this event, which focuses on the nature of Torrevieja, La Mata, and its surroundings, both current and future.
