Torrevieja hosts the exhibition "Women, Legends of Sport"
Diana Box, Torrevieja City Councilor for Sports, along with Jesús Segarra-Saavedra, director of the University of Alicante Campus in Torrevieja, presented the exhibition "Women, Legends of Sport" this morning. The exhibition will open at the Tavi y Carmona Sports Palace on Saturday, September 27, at 5:00 p.m.
UA professor Gema Sanchis-Soler will give the inaugural lecture " Sports Training in Women: Science and Challenges," in which she will address the most significant differences between men and women and their interaction with sports practice, highlight aspects to consider in training at different stages of the menstrual cycle, and include the experiences of some athletes.
Afterwards, attendees will be able to visit the exhibition, which includes a selection of objects, including the first Olympic torch that visited Spain on its way to Mexico '68, and the last one that travelled through Madrid and Barcelona on its way to Athens 2004. This exhibition also features original garments from important athletes, such as the swimsuit worn by Mari Paz Corominas, the first Spanish finalist in history in 1968, and the parade dress worn by Isabel Fernández from Alicante, the Spanish flag bearer in 2004 and judo gold medallist in Sydney 2000. The only Olympic Games held in Spain to date, Barcelona '92, are also represented with the podium tracksuit worn by the first Olympic gold medalist in the history of Spanish women's sport, Miriam Blasco, and the T-shirt worn by Carlota Castrejana, the only Spanish athlete to have been an Olympian in two different disciplines: basketball –Olympic diploma– and athletics, where she was European champion in the triple jump.
In other disciplines, athletes such as Theresa Zabell and her podium tracksuit from her second gold medal at Atlanta '96, Lydia Valentín and her jersey with which she won three medals at three consecutive Olympic Games (Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016) and the top of María Pérez who, together with Álvaro Martín, won an Olympic gold medal in race walking at Paris '24, are represented.
The exhibition also includes a section of international legends, including the 2023 American champion jersey worn by Simone Biles, the shoes worn by world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva, and Megan Rapinoe's 2019 World Championship jersey with the United States. As well as a section of local athletes with medals from world championships (the leotard and hoops of gymnasts Jennifer Colino and Mónica Ferrández Arenas as well as the diploma of Mari Carmen Moreno Bellido. Also the rowing banana of Yasmina Carbonell) and another from the University of Alicante (top of Mar Jover Pérez, 4 times Spanish long jump champion, 18 times international with the Spanish national team, 2 times Club champion and athlete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games; the accreditations, cap and swimsuit, among other objects, of Serrana Fernández, accredited at the Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004) Olympic Games and world championships in Moscow 2002 and Barcelona 2003; shirts of the Spanish National Futsal Team 2000 and Athens 2004 of the sisters Ana and María Ángeles Pino Cabrera ).
