The mayor has reported that all the accommodation facilities (habitats) are finished, so this week all the animals from the current shelter will be moved to this new area.

The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, along with the Councilor for Animal Protection and the municipal veterinarian, Beatriz Lloret, visited the construction site of the new municipal shelter, located on Avenida de Los Nenúfares, which is already more than 40% complete. Eduardo Dolón confirmed that, if there are no setbacks, the shelter will be operational during the first quarter of 2026.

The mayor has announced that all of the shelter's facilities (habitats) are now complete, so this week all of the animals from the current shelter will be moved to this new area. This will free up space for the rest of the shelter's construction work, especially the main building, which will include a doctor's office, operating room, reception room, meeting room, offices, storage rooms, and an animal laundry.

The municipal investment in these works amounts to €1,412,330 (VAT included), with the winning company being CONSTRUCCIONES URDECON SA

The project is being carried out in accordance with the initial project plan, and the intervention is being carried out in the planned phases due to the need for coexistence between the old and planned facilities. The first phase of the work is practically complete, consisting of the construction of the new animal kennels.

The Councilor for Animal Protection explained that the relevant authorizations for asbestos removal are currently being obtained, for the subsequent demolition of the old kennels in order to begin freeing up space for the construction of the main building and, in turn, freeing up access space for street cleaning service trucks to enter the gas supply station for vehicles.

Regarding sanitary equipment, it should be noted that the procurement process for the furniture and sanitary equipment for the normal operation of the shelter is currently underway, through the corresponding contracting file.

It's worth noting that the new municipal animal shelter will be open to the public 365 days a year. It has 64 kennels (36 for dogs, 20 for cats, and 8 accommodation facilities for isolated animals) and will have the capacity to house more than 35 dogs and 160 cats.

Finally, the mayor emphasized the importance of having modern and pleasant facilities for the well-being of all the animals that will be housed in these new facilities. Eduardo Dolón also highlighted the municipal investment in the care and attention of all these animals, which amounts to almost €2 million, including €1,412,330 for the execution of these works and €642,136 for the contract to care for the animals at the municipal shelter for the next two years. This service will be provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
