The project for the new Day Center for people with Alzheimer's has been presented

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has declared that the future "Tomás Ballester Herrera" Day Center will be a modern, accessible and fully adapted space, designed to offer a safe, comfortable and stimulating environment for users to receive specialized and quality care.

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, along with the councilor for NGOs and Volunteering, Trudy Páez, the architect who drafted the project, Francisco Juárez, and the president of AFA Torrevieja, Purificación García, presented the plans for the future "Tomás Ballester Herrera" Day Center for people with Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases at the association's headquarters. The new center will be built in Sector 25 of the General Urban Development Plan (opposite the Quirón Hospital), with an approximate constructed area of 2,700 m² and a site of over 7,900 m², and an estimated construction budget of between 7 and 8 million euros. The new center will be able to serve at least 100 patients.

The project is being drafted by architect Francisco Juárez, who was awarded the contract for €204,354.48 (VAT included). The project has a six-month execution period, so it is expected to be completed by April 2026. Once finished, the construction work for the center, which will take approximately one year, can be put out to tender.

The new AFA TORREVIEJA Day Centre will include:

-Access and Administration Area: Usable area of 421 m2. Reception, Cloakroom, Luggage Storage, Director's Office, 4 Administration Offices, Multipurpose Room for Professionals, Office, Assembly Hall, Accessible Restrooms for Visitors.

-General Services Area: Usable area of 482 m2. Dining room, Adapted Toilets (for dining room use),

Kitchen, Pantry, Garbage Room, Cleaning Room, Laundry Room, 4 Storage Rooms, Staff Changing Rooms (Male and Female), Facilities Room and Distributor.

-Specialized Care Area: usable area of 1,080 m2. 3 Multipurpose Activity Rooms, Room of

Activity and Social Room (Rest Room), Rehabilitation Room, Occupational Therapy Room, 3 Physiotherapy Cabins, Psychology Office, 2 Treatment and Curing Rooms, Medical Consultation, Hairdressing, Podiatry, 2 Multipurpose Offices, Adapted Toilets (Male and Female), 2 Geriatric Bathrooms and Distributor.

This project represents a decisive step in addressing one of Torrevieja's main social needs, as it will provide the city with a specialized center that will meet the complex and evolving needs of patients while also offering vital support to family members and primary caregivers. This center will feature modern, accessible facilities fully adapted to the needs of patients and their families, providing a safe, comfortable, and stimulating environment for patients.

Eduardo Dolón emphasized that “ this center is not just a building: it is a commitment to the dignity, well-being, and quality of life of those who need it most. The planned facilities—from specialized care areas to rehabilitation, physiotherapy, and social rooms—will allow us to provide a comprehensive service that adapts to the changing needs of patients.”

The mayor concluded by expressing his deep gratitude to AFA Torrevieja and all the professionals involved, as they have been fundamental in making this project a reality. With this investment of between 7 and 8 million euros, we are creating a resource that will improve the lives of hundreds of families in Torrevieja in the coming years.”

The Councillor for NGOs and Volunteering, Trudy Páez, emphasized that “the awarding of this contract brings us closer to our goal of having a top-tier social and healthcare resource to care for our elderly residents and those suffering from Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases. Given the complexity and impact these conditions have on individuals and their families, these centers have become an indispensable resource in the care of people with Alzheimer's. This is a firm commitment from the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón.”

Finally, the president of AFA TORREVIEJA thanked the mayor and the councilor for NGOs for their great involvement from the very beginning in this project for the construction of this Day Center, which is very necessary to be able to attend to more and more people with this disease, the association currently has a waiting list that does not fall below 30 to 35 people.
