2026 has begun, and with it, the UNED classroom in Torrevieja has resumed its regular activities. The temporary location at the International Conservatory hosts the Open University courses, aimed at those over 55, and the first course of this year, the fourth of this academic year, focuses on music.

The first session of the course entitled “The Musical Baton: The Musicians of Our Musicians” will be taught by composer and conductor José Francisco Sánchez. It will take place on Friday, January 9th, at 6:30 p.m., and will focus on Ricardo Lafuente. The oboe, played by the speaker himself, and the piano, played by Ukrainian professor Nataliya Khomiak, will be the instruments accompanying this class as they explore the sweetness of the Torrevieja-born maestro. In subsequent sessions, José F. Sánchez will explain and present musical arrangements of habaneras for orchestra, and, in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of his birth, will also pay tribute to the work of maestro Francisco Casanovas.

Interested senior students will continue attending the Auditorium on the 13th, 14th, 16th, 20th, 21st, and 23rd, and again during the final week of the course on the 27th and 28th. Doctors Francisco Joaquín Garres, Luis Sánchez Sánchez, and Aurelio Martínez will lead a program exploring zarzuela and opera through the habanera; they will also accompany Mozart's chamber music with clarinet accompaniment. Beethoven is the other great composer whose career we will explore. Musical practice for blind people and the anxieties of younger music students are among the topics covered in the theoretical and practical sessions of this unique program.
