The UA's Torrevieja campus is promoting the humanization of three health centers in the Torrevieja department through the illustrations of Alba Granero.
Parts of three health centers within the Torrevieja Health Department, specifically in Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada, have been transformed into more welcoming and comfortable spaces thanks to a humanization project led by the University of Alicante (UA) Torrevieja campus, featuring illustrations created by graphic designer Alba Granero Morales. This initiative, developed in collaboration and coordination with the Torrevieja Health Department, the Torrevieja City Council, the Valencian Regional Ministry of Health, the University of Alicante, and the Habaneras Shopping Center, aims to improve the experience of families and patients in spaces dedicated to childcare, pediatrics, and breastfeeding.
This project is part of a quality process called IHAN accreditation, the Initiative for the Humanization of Birth and Breastfeeding. This distinction is awarded by the non-profit association promoted by the WHO (World Health Organization) and UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund), which encourages Spanish maternity wards, health centers, and neonatal units to adopt practices that protect, promote, and support humanized childbirth and exclusive breastfeeding from birth. The Torrevieja Primary Care Health Department has been working in this area for over 15 years, and as a result, the Pilar de la Horadada Health Center recently received the IHAN award.
The presentation of the IHAN (Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative) award to the Pilar de la Horadada Health Center took place yesterday, Tuesday, January 13th, in the auditorium of the Pilar Local Police Station. The illustrator herself, Alba Granero, participated in the event, explaining the emotional and educational approach of her work, developed in coordination with Jesús Segarra-Saavedra, Professor at the University of Alicante (UA) and Director of the UA's Torrevieja Campus, and midwife Nancy Lorena Cárcamo Collati, from the department's breastfeeding committee. Technical supervision of the health-related content was provided by Dr. Isabel Baño Piñero, Assistant Nurse Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Torrevieja University Hospital and President of its Breastfeeding Committee. Also in attendance were José Cano, Manager of the Torrevieja Health Department; Antonio Gil, Medical Director of Primary Care for the Torrevieja Health Department; and José Galiano, Director of Primary Care Nursing for the Torrevieja Health Department. Salomé Laredo, president of IHAN Spain; Ana Isabel García Morago, representative of IHAN; Manuel Moro, UNICEF representative at IHAN; Larissa Timofeeva-Timofeev, director of the University Extension Secretariat of the University of Alicante; Mª José Solano, representative of the IHAN coordination at the Pilar de la Horadada Health Center and Marina Tormo, marketing director of the Habaneras Shopping Center.
In total, seven graphic design professionals submitted proposals for this artistic intervention. Alba Granero's ideas were selected for their figurative and approachable style, aligned with the Torrevieja Health Department's objective of humanizing spaces through an everyday, respectful, and representative perspective that reflects the cultural diversity of Torrevieja and the surrounding area. The project has transformed four key spaces: the waiting room, the breastfeeding room, the pediatric consultation room, and the nursing consultation room. Each space features a distinct illustration that forms part of a single visual universe, linked by concepts such as care, connection, protection, and closeness. The health centers participating in this pilot program were La Loma and El Acequión, both in Torrevieja, as well as the one in Pilar de la Horadada.
The design and printing costs were covered by the University of Alicante's Torrevieja campus, which also coordinated the project in collaboration with the Torrevieja University Hospital, the Torrevieja City Council, and guest artists. The Habaneras Shopping Centre financed part of the production of the frames.
