The company ORIGEN MURCIA, SA will manage the space for 10 years with an investment of nearly one million euros. The City Council guarantees the continuity of the traditional market and opens a new process to define the uses of the upper floors.

The Torrevieja City Council has approved in the Local Governing Board the provisional award of the concession of the “La Plasa” market to the company ORIGEN MURCIA, SA for a period of 10 years and with an annual fee of 56,300 euros.

Once the award is finalized and the contract is formalized, the company will be responsible for managing the traditional market and the gastromarket that will be located on the ground floor and the mezzanine of the building, with a total area of more than 2,000 square meters.

This project will transform La Plasa into a modern space that will combine the sale of fresh, local and gourmet products with an innovative gastronomic offering, following successful models implemented in cities such as Madrid, Seville or Murcia.

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has emphasized that the goal is to transform La Plasa into a modern, dynamic space open throughout the day, surpassing the traditional model: “We want it to stop being a space that closed at midday and become an active meeting point throughout the day, capable of generating economic activity, attracting visitors and revitalizing the urban center.”

The project involves a private investment of nearly one million euros and the creation of around 230 jobs, including direct and indirect employment, establishing itself as one of the main drivers of revitalization in the city center.

Furthermore, the City Council has guaranteed that the essence of the traditional market will be maintained, giving the possibility of ensuring the continuity of the current vendors under favorable conditions.

In this regard, the mayor highlighted the concessionaire's experience: "This is a company with more than 20 years of experience in this type of project, which meets all the requirements and has already demonstrated its capabilities in similar spaces."

The new market will combine the sale of fresh, locally sourced products with an innovative gastronomic offering, structured in different zones that will allow both traditional shopping and on-site consumption.

Furthermore, the project incorporates a management model that will include the participation of local business owners and self-employed individuals, promoting the integration of the city's economic fabric.

Regarding the upper floors of the building, the mayor sought to reassure the public amid concerns raised in recent weeks: “No disruptive activities or anything that might disturb the peace will be implemented. Our aim is to rigorously study which uses are most beneficial for Torrevieja and initiate a new process with all necessary safeguards.” The City Council will open a new file to define the uses for the second and third floors, which are not included in the current concession.

This new report will analyze, from the perspective of public interest and social return, some of the proposed ideas for the upper floors. For example, a multi-purpose hall to accommodate events that the Torrevieja City Council could use at certain times of the year for institutional purposes; or for cultural or gastronomic events, such as the DESAL festival.

The council is working with the expectation that the market could be operational by the end of the year or the beginning of next year, depending on the progress of the works, which are currently being carried out within the planned deadlines.

“We want to revitalize La Plasa, to attract people, generate spending, and boost the entire surrounding area. It’s a key opportunity for the present and future of downtown Torrevieja,” concluded Eduardo Dolón.
