Torrevieja City Council approves the renovation of three key sections of the sewer system with an investment of 218,356 euros
The Local Governing Board of the Torrevieja City Council approved last Wednesday, May 13, in an extraordinary and urgent session, the renewal actions of three fundamental sections of the municipal sewerage network, framed within the Renewal Funds and which will be executed by AGAMED, a mixed company in charge of the management of the integral water cycle.
This intervention plan has a base tender budget of €218,356 (VAT included) and is part of a municipal strategy to modernize critical infrastructure, aimed at ensuring the safety, functionality, and resilience of the sanitation system in the face of the city's urban growth. The works are expected to take approximately six months to complete, with a one-year warranty period.
The approved actions are part of a technical plan designed to anticipate the deterioration of aging infrastructure. Specifically, the goal is to prevent structural problems such as sinkholes in public roads, resulting from the loss of watertightness in pipes that have exceeded their useful life.
ADVANCED DIAGNOSIS FOR PRECISE ACTION
The selection of sections to be renovated was carried out through a thorough technical analysis based on the METRESA predictive algorithm, complemented by CCTV camera inspections. This diagnostic process detected "pre-collapse" situations in concrete pipes, with pathologies such as slab collapse, structural cracking, loss of watertightness, and reduced hydraulic capacity.
These defects posed a real risk of seepage into the subsoil and, consequently, of the formation of sinkholes, so the intervention is a priority to guarantee the safety of the public road.
THREE KEY ACTIONS IN STRATEGIC AREAS
The works will be carried out in three locations within the municipality, each with different characteristics and needs:
Calle Áncora (Aguas Nuevas): renewal of 65 meters of network by installing high density PVC pipe DN315, improving drainage in this residential area.
Azorín Street (urban center): work on a 42-meter section between San Pascual and Cariño streets, replacing the current collector with one of greater capacity and resistance (PVC Smooth Tile SN8 DN315).
Paseo de Los Locos – Phase II (Avda. Dr. Mariano Ruiz Cánovas): renewal of 36 meters of network, integrated into the redevelopment project of the promenade and subject to technical coordination due to its location in the coastal protection easement area.
With the aim of minimizing disruption to residents and businesses, the City Council and AGAMED have designed a specific traffic plan in coordination with the Local Police. The planned measures include temporary traffic regulations, restricted access for residents, and alternative routes depending on the section of roadwork.
ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT AND MAXIMUM WORKPLACE SAFETY
The project includes rigorous environmental management, with the treatment of more than 1,400 tons of soil and 237 tons of construction and demolition waste, which will be managed by authorized companies under circular economy criteria.
In addition, strict workplace safety protocols will be applied, especially in confined space work, including hazardous atmosphere controls in manholes, ensuring the protection of operators at all times.
The Torrevieja City Council emphasizes that this action represents a strategic investment in the so-called "invisible infrastructure", essential to sustain urban growth, strengthen citizen security and guarantee an efficient sanitation system prepared for the coming decades.
