Torrevieja consolidates its transformation into a university city with the implementation of the Psychology Degree and new qualifications for the 2026/2027 academic year
The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, together with the councilor for Education, Ricardo Recuero, the director of the National University of Distance Education (UNED), Francisco Escudero, the coordinator of the UNED Classroom in Torrevieja, Jesucristo Riquelme, and the new coordinator, Ana Pérez Caselles, presented this morning the university offer that the city will offer during the 2026/2027 academic year, marked by the incorporation of new degrees that consolidate Torrevieja as one of the main university centers of the region.
During the press conference, it was announced that UNED will implement, starting next year, the Degree in Psychology, one of the university degrees with the highest demand and best prospects for employment, which will be taught entirely in person at the new university headquarters in Torrevieja, located on Concepción street, a building that will share space with the future teachings of the University of Alicante (UA) and the Miguel Hernández University (UMH).
The mayor highlighted that this important step forward reflects the City Council's firm commitment to bringing higher education closer to young people in Torrevieja and throughout the Vega Baja region, avoiding travel and generating new educational and professional opportunities.
THE NEW UNIVERSITY HEADQUARTERS CONTINUES TO EXPAND ITS ACADEMIC OFFERINGS
The new Bachelor's Degree in Psychology will begin next academic year with a maximum of 150 places, all in-person. Registration will be open from July 1st to October 21st and can be completed through the UNED Elche website (www.uned.es). Admission requirements include having passed the University Entrance Exam (PAU or EVAU), holding a Higher Level Vocational Training qualification, or currently being enrolled in a degree program. There is no minimum grade requirement for admission.
The new university headquarters, whose inauguration is planned for the beginning of next September, is created with the aim of becoming a reference space for higher education in Torrevieja, housing the university offer of different academic institutions and promoting coexistence between students, teachers and researchers.
INTERNSHIP AT THE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL OF TORREVIEJA
Among the main new developments announced is the upcoming signing of a collaboration agreement between UNED (National University of Distance Education) and the Torrevieja University Hospital, which will allow Psychology students to complete their internships at this healthcare center. This collaboration will provide significant added value to the training of future professionals, enabling them to gain practical experience in a leading hospital setting and facilitating their entry into the job market.
During the presentation, it was also highlighted that Psychology is currently one of the university degrees with the highest professional demand, due to the growing need for specialists in areas such as mental health, education, business, social services, community intervention, and research.
MORE THAN 200 STUDENTS ENDORSE THE SUCCESS OF THE EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION DEGREE
The presentation also served to review the Degree in Early Childhood Education, implemented in 2022 in Torrevieja in a blended learning format and which has already exceeded 200 enrolled students, becoming one of the great successes of university implementation in the city.
Furthermore, this course has marked a historic milestone for Torrevieja, as, for the first time, students have started and completed a university degree without leaving the municipality, successfully finishing their Early Childhood Education studies.
AUDIOVISUAL COMMUNICATION, UNED'S NEXT FOCUS
During the press conference, it was also announced that UNED is already working on implementing the Bachelor's Degree in 21st Century Audiovisual Communication in 2027, which will be offered in a blended learning format. This degree is specifically geared towards new professional profiles linked to digital communication, audiovisual media, multimedia production, and content creation, thus expanding educational opportunities for students in the city and the surrounding region.
The UMH will implement the degree in Management and Administration of Businesses and Tourism Activities
For his part, Mayor Eduardo Dolón announced that the Miguel Hernández University will also incorporate the Degree in Management and Administration of Tourism Businesses and Activities during 2027, a qualification fully aligned with the economic model of Torrevieja.
This new degree will train professionals specializing in one of the city's strategic sectors, strengthening the link between university, business community and local economic development.
The mayor highlighted that the city is experiencing a historic moment in education thanks to the opening of the new university campus and the collaboration between the City Council and the various public universities, emphasizing that the municipal objective is to continue progressively expanding the range of university degrees, making Torrevieja a benchmark for higher education in the Vega Baja region and offering young people the opportunity to study, train and develop their professional future without leaving their city.
With the addition of the Psychology degree, the future implementation of Audiovisual Communication and the arrival of the UMH degree in Business Management and Tourism Activities, Torrevieja takes a new step in consolidating a university project that will place the city among the main centers of higher education in the province of Alicante.
