Torrevieja City Council receives 206,000 euros from ERDF funds to expand the network of bike lanes in the city
The Torrevieja City Council has received a grant from the Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (IVACE), financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), of 206,000 euros (excluding VAT) to develop a new 3,700 linear meter Cycling Network that will run between Delfina Viudes Avenue -from Ronda Ricardo Lafuente Aguado- to the intersection with Monge and Bielsa Avenue in the area of the Sports City, continuing along Avenida de la Mancha and Gabriela Mistral Street.
This project, processed by the European Funds Unit, aims to further improve the city's infrastructure by creating new cycle paths, enhancing existing ones, and providing designated parking areas throughout the municipality, with a particular focus on key destinations and travel generators.
In the first section of the subsidized route of Delfina Viudes Avenue, which has an extension of 1,450 meters, the aim is to implement a two-way bike lane on the existing sidewalk, carrying out accessible ramps and curb cuts at crossing points and access points to guarantee continuity and universal accessibility, specific horizontal and vertical signage, specific adaptation of curbs or street furniture if necessary and installation of a scooter user counter.
In the second section, 620 meters long, a new segregated two-way bike lane will be built on the roadway. Recycled rubber separators will be installed to ensure cyclist safety, and the route will be continuous until reaching Avenida Cortes Valencianas, where the crossing takes place. At that point, a marked bike crossing will be created with specific road markings, and safety will be enhanced according to the current conditions of the crossing using electronic signage.
The 1,250-meter section of Avenida de La Mancha proposes a bike lane with separate directions (one-way on each side) with a slight narrowing of traffic lanes to guarantee minimum safety widths and at the same time reduce the speed of motorized vehicles and continuous horizontal and vertical signage at all access points and intersections.
The final route of the subsidized bike lane runs along Gabriela Mistral Avenue to the vicinity of the Ciudad del Mar School, a distance of 380 meters. Along this section, improvements will be made to the school environment, which may include better pedestrian crossings, traffic calming measures, and signage indicating pedestrian and cyclist priority zones.
The proposed bike lane will allow some users of the Sports Complex and the Ciudad del Mar public school to access the facilities without needing a private vehicle, enabling the use of scooters or bicycles. This will reduce the amount of private traffic on the affected roads, improving mobility and reducing traffic congestion.
