The documentary "Daughters of Cynisca" arrives in Torrevieja to highlight gender inequality in sports

The Sports and Equality departments of the Torrevieja City Council are collaborating on the screening of the documentary film "Daughters of Cynisca. Women's sport speaks for equality", which will take place next Sunday, September 13, at 6:00 p.m., at the Torrevieja Music Palace.

This documentary, directed by Beatriz Carretero, addresses gender inequality in the sports field and gives a voice to leading women who have achieved important accomplishments throughout their professional careers.

Through their personal testimonies and experiences, the participants show the difficulties, barriers and situations of discrimination that female athletes face in their daily lives, while demanding greater equality of opportunity, recognition and visibility.

The Councillor for Sports, Diana Box Alonso, highlighted that this projection “allows us to learn firsthand about the reality that many women have experienced and continue to experience within sports, including those who have achieved the greatest national and international successes.”

Diana Box stated that “sport should be a space of equality, respect, and opportunity, where no one faces additional obstacles simply for being a woman.” She added that “the City Council wants to contribute to highlighting the achievements of women in sport and, especially, to raising awareness among younger generations about the importance of continuing to move towards true equality.”

LEADING FIGURES IN SPANISH WOMEN'S SPORT

The documentary features renowned athletes and professionals from various disciplines, including Paloma del Río, sports journalist; Ona Carbonell, a leading figure in synchronized swimming; Almudena Cid, rhythmic gymnast; Amaya Valdemoro, basketball player; Bea Fernández and Carmen Martín, handball players; Dori Ruano, cyclist; Jennifer Pareja, water polo player; Lydia Valentín, weightlifter; and Jessica Vall, swimmer. Also appearing are Mary Álvarez del Burgo, involved in volleyball; Laura Torvisco, a soccer coach; and Paula Tirini, a volleyball coach.

They all share their journeys, the achievements they have made and the obstacles they have had to overcome, highlighting situations of inequality that affect professional recognition, media visibility and opportunities for women in sports.

“The experience and example of these women serve as a reference for all girls and young women who practice sports and dream of developing a sports career,” said Diana Box, who encouraged athletes, clubs, families and citizens to attend the screening.

COLLOQUIUM WITH BEATRIZ CARRETERO AND LUCÍA CARMONA

Once the documentary has finished, there will be a discussion open to the public with the participation of the film's director, Beatriz Carretero, and Lucía Carmona, a sports manager specializing in Women and Sport.

The activity is part of the awareness-raising actions developed by the Torrevieja City Council and has the collaboration of the Valencian Public System of Social Services, the State Pact against Gender Violence and the Ministry of Equality of the Government of Spain.
