Torrevieja takes another step toward improving road safety in the city center with the demolition of a derelict building.

Torrevieja City Council has begun demolition work on a derelict municipal property located at the intersection of Maldonado Street and the intersection of the same name. This project is being carried out under a minor works contract, with a base tender budget of €40,996.92 and a two-month completion period.
City Councilor for Heritage, Domingo Paredes, noted that "the building's current location not only posed a risk to public safety, but also occupied part of the road, creating a serious urban planning and traffic problem for vehicles and pedestrians. This action is essential to restore safe passage and improve this urban environment."
Domingo Paredes emphasized that "this intervention is part of this government team's commitment to recovering new unused spaces, acting responsibly in situations of structural deterioration, and preparing the surrounding area for the enjoyment of its residents."
The building, acquired by the City Council in December 2024, was in an advanced state of disrepair, at risk of partial or total collapse, and its location encroached on part of the public thoroughfare, impeding normal traffic in the area. The demolition will restore the road's alignment, improve accessibility, and eliminate a potential source of unsafety for vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Once the demolition work is complete, the Department of Parks and Gardens plans to convert the plaza into a green area, an initiative that will contribute to improving the urban environment and providing the neighborhood with a new meeting and recreational space.
Councilor for Parks and Gardens, Concha Sala, stated that "the plan is that, once the site is demolished and refurbished, we can implement a family recreation project, which will include vegetation and children's play areas. This is a densely populated neighborhood, next to the busy Avenida Diego Ramírez Pastor, which requires more space and facilities for children and families."
