The short films "Alicia," "La Visitante," and "Killjote" win the 2025 Torreríficos Awards.
Torrerífico, the horror short film festival organized by the University of Alicante in Torrevieja, the Youth Department of Torrevieja City Council, and the cultural association La Comarca, awarded a total of €1,700 in prizes to the fourteen short finalists on Sunday evening, October 26th.
Competing for the awards were Bellum by Pablo Ferrando Ruiz; The Nest by Ignacio Rodó; The Face by Jose Cabrera; Tinieblas by Raúl Cerezo & Carlos Moriana; Camping Coyote by Jose Luis Morera (Chico Morera); A-Maniki by Elixabet Nuñez; KillJote by Ángel Villahermosa; Room 7 by David De Loro Robles; Perverso by Jose Luis Cabrera; The Terrible Bloody Massacre in which Everyone Dies Except the Girl at a Night-Time Birthday Party; The Remake by Guillermo Rojo; Five by Javier Cuenca; Siluro: The Beast of the Ebro by Jordi Romero Oya; Alicia by Tony Morales; and The Visitor by Tony Morales. However, only three won.
Alicia and La Visitacion, both by Malaga-born Tony Morales, won the jury's awards, both the first prize, valued at €1,000, and the runner-up prize, worth €500. The competition was very close, as just 5 points separated Alicia's 439 from La Visitacion's 434, according to the public rules of the call . Meanwhile, KillJote, by Ciudad Real-born Ángel Villahermosa, won the public prize of €200 with 34 votes shared among those who attended the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Center, where the 14 finalist shorts were screened.
They received the awards from Trudy Páez and María José Ruiz, councilors of the Torrevieja City Council; Luis Deltell, committee member; and Jesús Segarra, director of the UA Headquarters in Torrevieja; and Rebeca Westerveld and Rubén Aniorte, members of the jury.
Those who attended the screening and awards ceremony confirmed the difficulty of voting, the increase in the quality of the shortlisted films, and the increased turnout at the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Center in Torrevieja, where they were able to vote for their two favorite short films.
If Belén Cambronero Saiz, Luis Deltell Rodríguez, Sonia Pérez González, Rebeca Westerveld Fernández and Rubén Aniorte Rebollo, members of the evaluation committee, had a difficult time not only selecting the 14 finalists from the 31 short films received but also voting for the first two prizes, the people who accompanied the creative teams and the public who gathered there had an equally difficult time voting for the public award.
