Environmental educators visited the festival areas, encouraging residents to recycle glass to meet the recycling challenge set by Ecovidrio. The residents of Torrevieja recycled a total of 3,153,867 kilograms of glass containers. This means that each resident recycled an average of 31.4 kilograms of glass. Torrevieja has an average of 100 inhabitants per container, and currently has a total of 996 glass recycling containers installed throughout the municipality.

Ecovidrio, the only specialized SCRAP that manages selective collection on the ground and addresses the sustainability of glass packaging from its origin in Spain, in collaboration with the Department of Urban Cleaning, headed by María José Ruiz of the Torrevieja City Council, has launched the awareness campaign "Fiestas con eco" during the Patron Saint Festivities to promote glass recycling among all the festivalgoers and residents of the municipality.

This initiative aims to surpass the glass recycling rate set by Ecovidrio for November compared to the same period last year. If the municipality achieves this goal, Ecovidrio will award it the 'Eco-Friendly Festivities' prize, which recognizes the community's involvement in the campaign to create more sustainable celebrations.

To reinforce the campaign, environmental educators visited the municipality and toured the main areas where the festivities take place to inform citizens of the challenge and encourage them to recycle glass and participate in games and challenges in exchange for an exclusive backpack with the design of the 'Eco-Friendly Festivities' campaign image.

Specifically, the environmental educators were at Antonio Soria Park on Saturday, December 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. during the celebration of the massive Paella Competition.

Furthermore, attendees were able to upload their most sustainable photos to social media using the hashtag #FiestasConEco.

This year we continue with the 'Eco-Friendly Festivals Network' of municipalities committed to sustainability in their festivals and dedicated to improving their environmental commitment year after year. This network has a website that will showcase all participating municipalities along with the actions they are implementing for more sustainable festival events, including Torrevieja.

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF GLASS RECYCLING

The glass deposited in the containers is 100% recycled and used to manufacture new containers, indefinitely and without losing its original properties. By recycling glass, we prevent the growth of landfills.

Recycling glass is a key element in the fight against climate change. By using cullet – recycled glass – in the manufacture of new containers, we avoid extracting raw materials from nature, preventing soil erosion and deforestation.

In addition, CO2 emissions are minimized in the manufacturing process and energy is saved.
