The City Council launches the new force of Mobility Agents to reinforce traffic regulation and safety in the city
The Torrevieja City Council continues to strengthen public services with the launch of the new Local Police Traffic Enforcement Officers, whose members took office yesterday, Friday, July 10. This new unit, created to improve urban mobility and optimize traffic management, will begin service next week, once the specific training period, which has already begun, is completed.
The new unit consists of a supervisor and 20 traffic officers, who are equipped with 10 125cc motorcycles for their duties. The service contract will have an initial duration of one year, with the possibility of three additional extensions, up to a maximum of four years.
For the time being, the officers will be located at the Los Balcones Local Police Station, until, presumably at the end of this year, the adaptation of the new premises located next to the Local Police Headquarters is completed, where this unit will be permanently established.
The Mobility Agents will perform specific functions of regulating, organizing and directing traffic, both of vehicles and pedestrians, allowing the Local Police officers to dedicate more resources to citizen security and administrative policing tasks.
Their main duties include supporting the Local Police with traffic matters, regulating traffic at school entrances and exits, monitoring traffic in the city center and on the main access roads, and controlling bus lanes, parking, loading and unloading zones, and parking spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility. They will also assist with traffic management during processions, sporting events, parades, and other large gatherings held in Torrevieja.
DIFFERENTIATED FUNCTIONS OF THE LOCAL POLICE
Traffic officers are not part of the Security Forces, so their powers are limited exclusively to matters related to traffic regulation and urban mobility. They do not prepare official reports, cannot make arrests, and can only issue citations for traffic violations within their area of responsibility.
The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, welcomed the 20 new traffic officers and their supervisor who joined the new municipal service today, encouraging them to carry out their work with professionalism, approachability, and a strong commitment to public service. He stated, “Your work will be fundamental in making Torrevieja a safer, more organized city with more efficient mobility. The City Council has complete confidence in your ability and commitment to work every day for the benefit of all Torrevieja residents and the thousands of people who visit us throughout the year.”
Eduardo Dolón also emphasized that the creation of this unit will allow the Local Police to concentrate more personnel on their core public safety duties, while the Traffic Officers specialize in managing traffic, facilitating circulation, and improving the city's daily operations. He described it as a measure "that will directly impact the quality of life of citizens and result in a Torrevieja that is better organized, safer, and better prepared to face the significant growth it is experiencing."
