Today marks the start of the application period for municipal grants of up to 1,500 euros for university students in Torrevieja.

The Torrevieja City Council, through the Department of Youth, has today opened the application period for municipal aid for young university students for the 2025/2026 academic year.

The call for applications, published yesterday in the Official Gazette of the Province of Alicante (BOP), has a maximum budget of €200,000 and will allow for individual grants of up to €1,500 to help cover some of the main expenses associated with university studies. The grants can be used to pay tuition fees, purchase textbooks, and travel costs on intercity public transport to get to the university.

The application period for these grants will be ten business days, starting today, Tuesday, September 1st. Applications can be submitted in person at the Torrevieja Town Hall's General Registry or electronically through the municipal website. BENEFICIARY REQUIREMENTS

The call is aimed at young people up to 35 years old who during the 2025/2026 academic year have completed official Bachelor's or equivalent studies, or official Master's studies, either in person or remotely.

Applicants must be registered residents of Torrevieja and have maintained this status continuously and uninterruptedly for the two years immediately preceding the application. Furthermore, the per capita family income cannot exceed €17,000 per year, and applicants must meet the academic requirements outlined in the call for applications.

These requirements include an access grade or a minimum average grade of 5 points, depending on whether the application corresponds to the first university year, subsequent courses, or official Master's studies.

ELIGIBLE EXPENSES

Municipal grants may cover university tuition fees, provided that proof of enrollment and payment by the student is submitted. The purchase of textbooks directly related to the courses taken during the academic period covered by this call for applications will also be eligible for funding.

Regarding transport, regular journeys made by bus or train between September 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026 may be included, provided that their purpose is to go to the university center where the applicant is enrolled.

COMPETITIVE CONTEST AND EVALUATION CRITERIA

Applications will be evaluated through a competitive process, with a maximum score of 21 points. The scoring will take into account the applicants' economic, family, and academic circumstances, as well as the characteristics of their studies and the distance between Torrevieja and the location of the university.

The assessment criteria include family per capita income, the unemployment status of any member of the family unit, the status of a large or single-parent family, the existence of a disability, and certain circumstances requiring special protection.

Academic record and the type and level of studies will also be considered. In this section, higher scores will be given to in-person studies compared to distance learning, official Master's degree programs, and being in the final year of the degree program. The distance between Torrevieja and the university center the student must regularly travel to will also be one of the criteria for determining the final score.

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, emphasized that these grants represent a direct way to support young people during a crucial stage of their education and to reduce the financial burden that university studies place on many families. “Investing in the education of our young people is investing in the future of Torrevieja. We want them to be able to acquire knowledge, develop their talents, and build their life plans with the greatest possible opportunities, regardless of their families' economic situation, knowing that they have the support of their City Council,” he stated.

For his part, the Councilor for Youth, Domingo Paredes, explained that the grant program aims to cover specific expenses such as tuition, textbooks, and transportation to the university. Paredes encouraged eligible students to consult the guidelines and submit their applications within the established deadline: “This is €200,000 earmarked directly to help our young people continue their studies, and we want this aid to reach as many students as possible who need it.”
