Students from the 14 schools in the town will plant nearly 800 plants in 2.5 hectares of the Lagunas de La Mata-Torrevieja Natural Park

The Councilor for the Environment of the Torrevieja City Council, Antonio Vidal, together with the Councilor for Education, Ricardo Recuero, the director-conservator of the Lagunas de La Mata-Torrevieja Natural Park, Francisco Martínez, the deputy manager of AGAMED, Gemma Cruz, and the person in charge of Customer Relations at Leroy Merlín, Natalia Vallejos, have presented this morning the planting and regeneration activities that will be carried out on the occasion of the celebration of Tree Day 2023. Some actions that will be carried out throughout tomorrow, Tuesday, January 31, and Wednesday, February 1, for schoolchildren from the 14 educational centers in Torrevieja.

In total there are more than 600 schoolchildren who have received different informative talks to publicize the importance of ecological regeneration and the planting criteria that will be used during the sessions. This activity that begins tomorrow, January 31, will become one of the most participatory and important in recent years in the Valencian Community.

The Natural Park educators have given these sessions prior to planting and, at the time of regeneration, the students must follow the technical indications set by the park workers.

Under a forecast of 800 plants for 2.5 hectares, students from the 14 schools will travel to plant a very important area of the Natural Park with native species such as kermes oak, mastic, tamarisk, lavender, juniper, blackthorn, palmetto , santolina, Aleppo pine, buckthorn, rosemary and carob.

In order to carry out this activity, AGAMED has carried out the preparation and adaptation work for the planting space, located in the upper area of the Park, as well as relief irrigation and protectors for the plants.

Francisco Martínez has indicated that this area where the regeneration work will be carried out, adjacent to his mountain, is currently degraded, because it is old abandoned crop terraces.

For her part, Gemma Cruz highlighted that within the SD+ objectives and the environmental policy, AGAMED establishes different indicators aimed at minimizing the impacts of CO2 emissions. In addition, it has highlighted the enhancement of education and environmental regeneration, "celebrating this day to raise awareness among the population in general and school students in particular about the importance of vegetation for CO2 absorption and to prevent the degradation of the natural park areas.

Finally, Natalia Vallejos has reported that the involvement of Leroy Merlin in this environmental regeneration action includes the delivery of shovels, buckets and gloves for planting trees to all participating students.
