The Councilor for Culture of the Torrevieja City Council, José Antonio Quesada, has received today the donation of archaeological material made up of six amphorae, whose final destination will be its permanent exhibition at the Museum of the Sea and Salt.

The pieces come from two families from Torrevieja who have found them in two family warehouses, and immediately contacted the Department of Culture with the discovery, they have complied with the provisions of Law 4/98 on Valencian Cultural Heritage, which establishes that the Archaeological pieces, as objects that make up the Historical Heritage, are public domain assets owned by the Administration.

For all these reasons, the Councilor for Culture appreciates the responsibility in complying with article 65 of this law, which obliges anyone who finds an archaeological object to report it to the authorities as soon as the finding occurs.

The pieces are as follows and have been preliminarily analyzed as:

1 Baetic amphora, dated from 50 to 125 AD (1st century)

1 Italic amphora, dated from 125 to 25 BC

1 Punic amphora, dated from 500 to 250 BC

3 storage amphoras, widely dated from the 16th to the 19th century.

Most of the amphorae found in this area were olive oil, used to transport oil from the Baetic area of the peninsula and shipped on the Portus Ilicitanus for transfer to Rome. Others were also used to transport wine and fish sauces (garum) highly appreciated by the Romans. Due to the morphology of these three pieces, they could be amphoras dedicated to the storage and transport of one of these products.

It is worth noting the singular fact in this maritime region, that fishermen wrapped in their fishing nets frequently collected a large number of amphoras and ceramic objects that become part of our archaeological heritage, coming from the following enclaves according to underwater archaeological charts : Cabo Cervera, Punta del Salaret, Playa de los Locos (Torrevieja), Bay – Port of Torrevieja and Cala Ferrís.
