Since last February 21, the Department of Animal Protection of the Torrevieja City Council is developing a Feral Cat Sterilization Campaign that aims to control feline colonies and, at the same time, avoid collateral damage that may be generating in biodiversity natural and urban, mainly caused by the existing colonies on the periphery and within the Natural Park of the lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja and in the Municipal Natural Area "Molino del Agua".

The Councilor for Animal Protection, Concha Sala, has highlighted the implicit importance of this campaign and, in this sense, has highlighted that initially the contract contemplated the castration of 350 cats, managing to increase the contract by 837 more castrations. In this way, the figure may rise to 1,187 castrations per year, indicating that the objective is to achieve a statistic that is close to a certain control of the feral colonies in the municipality. Until yesterday, April 13, a total of 229 castrations have already been carried out.

For the correct development of the campaign, we have had the valuable and indispensable collaboration of different feline welfare groups such as "Alma de Gato", Project "CES", Animalistas Torrevieja and the new entity "La Voz de los gatos". The Department of Animal Protection expresses its gratitude to all the associations for their involvement and work in the development of this campaign.

The total investment cost of this campaign rises to 53,949.15 euros, an amount financed entirely by the Torrevieja City Council.
