The Department of Education of the Torrevieja City Council and the University of Alicante Headquarters in the city, together with the AulaIA project of the UA, organize family workshops on Artificial Intelligence on Saturday, September 30, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: 00 hours at the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Center. The objective of this event is to bring Artificial Intelligence closer to girls and boys in Primary Education. This is a family activity, so minors will have to be accompanied by an adult.

These workshops are carried out within the project “AI Classroom: Introducing Artificial Intelligence in Primary Education", financed by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) - Ministry of Science and Innovation, which aims to develop teaching materials for the training of students and teachers in the third cycle of Primary Education (ages between 10 and 12 years) in aspects related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), its technical foundations, its impact on today's society, as well as its ethical and moral implications.

This type of technology is increasingly present in our lives (for example, through virtual assistants in the home such as Alexa and Google Home) and it is foreseeable that in the near future the expansion of AI will imply a drastic transformation in many of us. the jobs we now know, especially affecting today's boys and girls.

It should be noted that within the project, a set of teaching resources on different aspects of AI have been developed that are available online for free access and use through the website www.aulaia.es. These materials include, on the one hand, a set of activities and, on the other, a series of introductory videos to AI that describe both its technical aspects and its economic and social implications. Although the target audience for these activities and videos is students and teachers in the third cycle of Primary Education, their contents are suitable for the general public.

The workshops organized in Torrevieja aim to bring AI closer to Primary students, promoting interest from an early age in the STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) through the direct application of AI tools to activities in their closest environment, highlighting the social and economic usefulness of science and technology. Three age groups will be organized for the workshops, which will carry out different activities according to their level:

1st and 2nd of Primary (6 and 7 years old).

3rd and 4th of Primary (8 and 9 years old).

5th and 6th grade of Primary (10 and 11 years old).

Each of these groups will be made up of 16 children along with their companions.

The planning of the activities will be as follows:

10:00 – 10:15h: Welcome talk and short introduction to the fundamental concepts of Artificial Intelligence.

10:15 – 11:30 a.m.: Workshop 1: train your own Artificial Intelligence.

11:30 – 11:45h: Rest. We invite you to lunch to regain strength.

11:45 – 13:00h: Workshop 2: Artificial Intelligence in action.

The welcome talk will be held for all groups simultaneously in the Assembly Hall of the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Center in Torrevieja. The 1st and 2nd Primary group will carry out a single workshop. You can choose your shift (the same workshop will be taught in both shifts): 10:15 – 11:30 a.m. or from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The 3rd and 4th Primary group, as well as the 5th and 6th Primary group, will carry out both Workshop 1 and Workshop 2, with a break between them to regain strength.
