The Councilor for the Environment of the Torrevieja City Council, Antonio Vidal, reports that about thirty students from the University of Syracuse (New York) visited the “Molino de Agua” Municipal Area in La Mata, Torrevieja, last week, on the occasion of the Marine Ecology of the Mediterranean Sea seminar.

During the visit, the students were able to learn first-hand about the conservation and recovery actions of the Municipal Natural Park “Molino de Agua” of La Mata. In addition, attendees participated directly in the removal of 1 Ton of Invasive Exotic Species (IAS), specifically the species Carpobrotus acinaciformis, commonly known as cat's claw. This species from South Africa is a serious threat to dune ecosystems, since it fixes the sand and alters the characteristics of the soil, displacing the dune vegetation.

The Association of Naturalists of the Southeast (ANSE), with the support of the Torrevieja City Council and the ecological products company Naturgreen, has been working in recent years on the recovery of the dune ecosystem of this space, through the recovery of the dune habitats , especially the coastal juniper and juniper forests, as well as the fight against Invasive Exotic Species.
