The Councilor for Urban Cleaning, María José Ruiz, reports that from today, Wednesday, May 22, and until Friday, May 24, Torrevieja receives the Recycling Challenge team. Today, Wednesday, the team has set up shop at the weekly La Mata market (on Avenida de los Daneses); Tomorrow, Thursday, it will be on the Juan Aparicio promenade, and on Friday the 24th it will be at the weekly market in Torrevieja (on Avenida Delfina Viudes).
During these three days in Torrevieja the El Reto team interacts with the population with the aim of resolving doubts about how to correctly recycle packaging. In addition, part of the team tours the main streets and businesses of the town to inform them about the campaign itself. The campaign is completed with informative talks to be held at the Torrevigía Secondary Education Institute.
The El Reto campaign includes a prize of 6,000 euros for the winning town. If Torrevieja wins the award, the amount will go to the local NGOs ALPE and APANEE.
“The Recycling Challenge” aims to demystify the hoaxes around recycling and raise awareness among the population of its importance for caring for the environment and the planet. An animation and training team approaches citizens to share with them the commitment to correctly separate and recycle cans, cartons and plastic containers in the yellow container, as well as paper and cardboard, in the blue container. They do this through recreational activities and environmental education, as well as informative and awareness-raising talks in educational centers for various neighborhood groups, previously selected.
The action is proposed as a competition between municipalities that are part of the Vega Baja Sostenible Consortium to increase the use of the yellow container, by at least 10% on average, during the two months following the campaign period, compared to the data from the same period of the year 2023.
The campaign pursues face-to-face interaction with the citizen, and all actions are directed at the organizations, traditions and culture of the geographical area on which the action is taken. The aim is for the institutions, organizations, social and sports clubs, associations and educational centers of each locality to be participants and promoters of the initiative. Its on-site actions allow it to reach the largest possible number of neighbors and homes in order to multiply the results of the campaign: correctly inform and resolve doubts to increase the correct separation of waste and make its subsequent recycling possible.
