To raise awareness of the role of women in science, technology and innovation, as well as to awaken scientific vocations, especially those related to STEM disciplines (scientific, technological, engineering and mathematical) among the youngest girls, yesterday the workshops “Learn how our brain works” and “ Discover how to extract DNA from a banana” were held by neuroscientist María Luisa Molina Gallego.

This is an initiative carried out by the University of Alicante (UA) in Torrevieja, in collaboration with the Department of Education of the Torrevieja City Council.

The workshops were held at the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre in Torrevieja, in groups of thirty people at three times: 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 17:30 and 18:30.

The attendees, mostly students from the Colegio Público Cuba, but also from UNED-Torrevieja and families, learned, on the one hand, how our brain works and, on the other, how to extract DNA from a banana.

María Luisa Molina Gallego is a neuroscientist, science communicator and graduate in Biology from the University of Alicante. She began her research career in the laboratory of Dr. Pere Berbel-Navarro of the Department of Histology of the UA at the Institute of Neurosciences of Alicante, where she completed her thesis on the development of the cerebral cortex in hypothyroid rat embryos.
