The Torrevieja Municipal Archive has its origin in the need to systematically collect, compile and organize all documentary remains that would mean the recovery of a dispersed heritage and in serious danger of deterioration and disappearance. On the other hand, said Municipal Archive must exercise, as a primary function, the custody of all municipal administrative documentation, generated in the different dependencies of the Torrevieja City Council, as well as making it available to authorized personnel for consultation. These two aspects of its activity led to the creation of the Torrevieja Municipal Archive in July 1989, with Mª del Carmen Cerezuela as the titular municipal Archiver, since that date. Subsequently, the Internal Regulations of the Municipal Archive were approved on September 29, 1993 (published in B.O.P. No. 254, of November 5 of that year).
From 1989 to January 2008, its physical location has been in the semi-basement facilities of the Town Hall, located in the Plaza de la Constitución in Torrevieja. Faced with the increasingly growing volume of municipal documentation that had to be housed in the dependencies of our Archive, it was necessary to prepare a new premises, destined to serve as a Municipal Archive that would adequately respond to the needs of the personnel assigned to it and, in general , of the public that used the services offered by it.
In this sense, from the beginning of the aforementioned year 2008 to the present time, the Municipal Archive department is located in a larger premises, located on Antonio Machado street in our town (in front of the Bus Station and next to the Courts of Torrevieja).
Together with the purely administrative work, carried out from the Torrevieja Municipal Archive, and which is fundamentally specified in the reception and custody of municipal administrative documents and making them available to the staff of our City Council and, ultimately, to the public In general, its specifically historical function, of conservation, recovery, advice and dissemination of historical-local documents, for the better knowledge of the history of our municipality, must be highlighted. To this end, the Municipal Archive has published five books since February 2001 (under the name "Ad Turres" and with the character of "Torrevieja Municipal Archive Magazine"), various exhibitions of a cultural and cultural nature have been organized. promotes the promotion of whatever the conservation, promotion and propagation of the customs and traditions of our population may mean.

DOCUMENTARY FUNDS
The documents located in the Torrevieja Municipal Archive can be described under the categories of Municipal Funds (of a historical nature - comprised between the years 1830 and 1960 - and of an administrative nature - from 1961 to the present -).
The administrative documentation is organized into five sections (relating to Government Bodies [Mayor's Office, Protocol, Local Police ...], Secretariat [Registry, File, Hiring, Statistics, Quintas, Openings, Personnel ...], Intervention [Income, Expenses, Capital Gains ...], Treasury [Cash, Collection ...], all of them subdivided into subsections, series ...
The documents are classified according to the organization chart of municipal operation and management, according to a classification chart that is constantly changing and modifying, depending on the increase in the functions of the municipal institution.
There is no expurgation and new entries are made by transfer, standardized through the funds remittance sheets.
At present, in the Administrative Archive there are 20,000 units and 2,576 volumes. In the Historical Archive (as indicated, comprising documents dated between the years 1830 and 1960) there are 986 units and 912 volumes. The totality of units in our Archive amounts to the number of 20,986 and the totality of volumes to 3,488.
Regarding its state of preservation, it is generally good, except for certain historical documents that have deteriorated due to having been in adverse conditions for a long time.
On the other hand, as regards the instruments of description, in the Historical Archive there is a general inventory, a thematic index (prepared with chronological and topographic outputs that refer us to the descriptions of the inventory), chronological and descriptive of the units. In the administrative file, on the other hand, there is an organization chart established based on the guidelines offered by the Generalitat Valenciana and a database prepared by the IT department of this City Council. In this same section, the document submission sheets make an inventory of the income received in this Municipal Archive for transfers.

BIBLIOGRAPHIC FUNDS AND PERIODIC PUBLICATIONS
- Auxiliary Library
The Municipal Archive of Torrevieja has an auxiliary library (whose operating rules are included in the Organic Regulation of the A.M.T.), and integrated, so far, for a total of 406 volumes divided into the following sections:
- 173 volumes relating to bibliography of specifically local topics.
- 126 volumes relating to bibliography of a general nature.
- 107 volumes relating to bibliography on regional issues.
Likewise, we have various collections of encyclopedic dictionaries, to which must be added the "Alcubilla Dictionary" (27 volumes) and the Spanish Legal Encyclopedia (95 volumes, covering the years 1912 to 1944).
The consultation of said bibliographic collection is free, upon request signed by the interested party and authorized by the Mayor. Consultation hours are 8.00 a.m. at 3:00 p.m. (winter) and 8.00 a.m. at 2.30 p.m. (summer time), Monday through Friday.
- Newspaper library
Currently, the Torrevieja Municipal Archive does not have such a service.

Finally, it should be noted the existence of various deposits and donations of documentary funds in this Municipal Archive, of extraordinary value for the historical research of our municipality, highlighting those related to the donation of Juan Aparicio López and Ricardo Lafuente Aguado. Currently, they are in the process of inventory and cataloging.
THE BUILDING: ORGANIZATION, INSTALLATION AND EQUIPMENT
The Torrevieja Municipal Archive is located in a building of approximately 1,900 square meters, located on Calle de Antonio Machado, No. 137 of said municipality. The aforementioned premises are divided into 3 floors, the upper floor and the basement used to store administrative documents; and the middle floor (or ground floor) houses the offices of the Municipal Archives, a consultation room for the public and a space for holding exhibitions of a cultural nature and, finally, the section dedicated to hosting the documents corresponding to the Torrevieja Municipal Historical Archive.
The aforementioned building is equipped with the corresponding detection systems against theft and fire, as well as furniture for the installation of the documentary and bibliographic collections.
SERVICES
- Advice and consultation service
As has been indicated, in accordance with the Heritage Law of 1985, Law 30/92 of Common Administrative Procedure and the Law of Archives of the Generalitat Valenciana of 2005, the consultation of historical and bibliographic documents is free, upon signed request by the interested party and authorized by the competent authority (Mr. Mayor). Previously, the opening hours of the Municipal Archive were indicated. The query is recorded by means of a "query sheet" duly completed and signed by the interested party. The loan of documents to the public is excluded.
The Torrevieja City Council staff may use the loan and consult administrative documents from the Municipal Archive upon request (corresponding sheet) completed and signed by the official. The specific rules of these services are reflected, in detail, in the Organic Regulations of the Torrevieja Municipal Archive, already mentioned. At present, internal regulations have been drawn up, in accordance with the new regulations and which are pending approval by the competent bodies.
- Cultural diffusion (visits, exhibitions, publications)
We have also referred to the publications carried out from the Torrevieja Municipal Archive by local researchers, in number of five and under the title "Ad Turres". Magazine of the Municipal Archive of Torrevieja. Said volumes are comprehensive of diverse articles related to investigation of the local history fundamentally, although two of them (numbers 3 and 5) are monographic studies (referring to the History of the Torrevejense Musical Union and to the figure of the journalist and intellectual D. Juan Aparicio López). The aforementioned volumes were published from 2001 to 2007.
On the other hand, since the official opening of the new Archive facilities in June 2008, this institution has hosted, in its current location, two exhibitions of a cultural nature, relating to a tour of the General History of the Archive, with a sample of its documents and activities, and to exalt the figure of the famous Torrevieja musician Ricardo Lafuente Aguado, recently deceased.
- Document digitalization
Currently the Torrevieja Municipal Archive is in the process of computerization and adaptation to new technologies, which implies considering that in the future it will be able to offer the aforementioned digitization service.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, certain documents can be reproduced by photocopies, except those that show some degree of deterioration or those that, due to being sewn, cannot be reproduced without being damaged.
