The main hall of the Cervantes Institute of Madrid was dressed up yesterday, Friday, May 17, to host an interesting proposal arising from the collaboration agreement between the Municipal Board of Habaneras of Torrevieja and the Cervantes Institute itself, around the genre of Havana.

Under the name «Torrevieja: Counterpoints of salt and sugar. The journey of the Spanish language through Habanera", a round table was first held, inaugurated by the vice president of the Municipal Board of Habaneras and Councilor for Culture, José Antonio Quesada, who highlighted the good achievements obtained as a result of this agreement, highlighting the important anniversary that is celebrated this year, with the 70th International Habaneras and Polyphony Contest of Torrevieja.

World authorities in the habanera genre took part in it, such as Dr. Victoria Eli Rodríguez, Emeritus Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid and a true world leader, as well as Dr. Inmaculada Matía Polo, professor of Musicology. of the UCM. The colloquium was moderated by Aurelio Martínez López.

The national identities, Cuban and Spanish, expressed through the habanera, as well as the topic of Spain and the Spanish in the two-by-four genre, focused much of the debate, illustrated with numerous examples of Havana anthologies to reach a third block in which the habanera of Torrevieja and its Certamen, which has already reached 70 editions, became the protagonist, being an absolute example of the journey that the Spanish language makes through the habanera thanks to choirs from all over the world who are interested in the same.

In the second part, the voices and guitars, lutes and bandurrias of the Maestro Ricardo Lafuente Choir and Orchestra, made the essence of the Torrevieja habanera reach the heart of the Cervantes Institute, reeling off a careful repertoire with some of the most emblematic compositions of popular character, but especially works by maestro Lafuente, which enjoyed the warm applause of the public that filled this unique auditorium.

Titles such as The sweet habanera, With a taste of salt, La Paloma, Goodbye star of my nights, I will tell you, Ojos que amé, La bella Lola or Torrevieja, sounded in the voices and in the Torrevieja orchestra that wrote a page in this way more to remember.
