Greener, more comfortable patios, open to the community

Project 3 transforms the playgrounds of the CEIP El Acequión and Inmaculada schools through nature-based solutions, with the aim of improving climate comfort, promoting biodiversity and creating healthier spaces for learning, play and coexistence.

The project combines technical and socio-environmental diagnosis, participation of the educational and neighborhood community, co-design, drafting and technical execution, and a subsequent program of revitalization and environmental education to consolidate the use of the new courtyards as living spaces.

01 Co-design, intervention and socio-environmental activation of school playgrounds

Operation P3.O7 comprehensively addresses the renaturalization of the school playgrounds at the El Acequión and Inmaculada primary schools. The process begins with an assessment of the physical, environmental, and social conditions of each school, including infrastructure, vegetation, solar exposure, temperature, ventilation, soil permeability, and the needs of the users.

Climate shelters through nature-based solutions

The new courtyards will incorporate design criteria adapted to the Mediterranean climate and solutions aimed at increasing shade, improving permeability and water management, reinforcing vegetation and biodiversity, and reducing the impact of heat waves. The design must also take into account drought and episodes of intense rainfall.

A design built with the educational community

The transformation will be defined through a participatory and co-design process involving students, teaching and non-teaching staff, families, the Parents' Association, neighborhood associations, and local organizations. Students will play a particularly important role, using activities adapted to ages 3 to 12 and visual tools that allow them to incorporate their perspectives into the technical proposals.

Education and socio-environmental revitalization

Following the intervention, each courtyard will be incorporated as an educational resource through a socio-environmental revitalization program. The activities will address, among other topics, the water cycle, local biodiversity, adaptation to climate change, and the care of green spaces as a shared responsibility.

The project also includes teacher training and teaching materials to facilitate the continuity of the program, as well as activities for observing vegetation and fauna and workshops linked to the preferences of the educational community.
